Nathanael F. Garriss was born in Flatbrookville, Walpeck Township, Sussex County, NJ on May 16,1830 to Jonas (Jesse?) Smith Garriss and Elizabeth Hissam Garriss (Garess). In 1860, he volunteered with Co B of the 58th Pennsylvania Volunteers of the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. As a 30-year-old volunteer, he was considerably older than the average Civil War soldier. He allegedly was once shot in the left arm and suffered nerve damage.

He married Elizabeth Everett Garriss (1830-1898) and had nine children. He later married Emily Coleman(1850-1931) He died on May 5, 1919 at the age of 88, 11 months and 19 days in Bradford County, PA. He is buried in the East Herrick Cemetery.

His children were:
